How a 12-team basketball round robin works

Every team plays each of the other 11 teams once, which is 66 games in total. With an even number of teams every team plays in every round, so the whole schedule fits in 11 rounds with no byes. A double round robin (home and away) doubles that to 132 games over 22 rounds.

Round 1 pairings

The generator uses the circle method, which guarantees each pair meets exactly once. For 12 teams seeded 1–12, round 1 is: 1 v 12, 11 v 2, 3 v 10, 9 v 4, 5 v 8, 7 v 6. Home and away alternate so no team is stuck with all away games.

How long does it take?

Using 60-minute basketball slots, 66 games need about 66 hours on one court, 33 hours on two, or 16.5 hours on four. A weekly league playing one round per week runs 11 weeks. Pro's scheduler turns those numbers into actual dates, start times and courts, honouring rest gaps and games-per-day limits.

Basketball rules that affect the schedule

Rec-league basketball games usually run two 20-minute halves with a running clock, so a 60-minute slot including warm-up and changeover is realistic. Ties are broken with overtime, so standings use a simple 2-points-per-win system.

Tie-breakers: Head-to-head record, then point differential (often capped at ±20 per game to discourage running up the score), then points scored.

Organizer tip: Give each team at least 60 minutes between games on the same day; back-to-back games are the most common complaint from players.
