How a 16-team volleyball round robin works

Every team plays each of the other 15 teams once, which is 120 games in total. With an even number of teams every team plays in every round, so the whole schedule fits in 15 rounds with no byes. A double round robin (home and away) doubles that to 240 games over 30 rounds.

Round 1 pairings

The generator uses the circle method, which guarantees each pair meets exactly once. For 16 teams seeded 1–16, round 1 is: 1 v 16, 15 v 2, 3 v 14, 13 v 4, 5 v 12, 11 v 6, 7 v 10, 9 v 8. Home and away alternate so no team is stuck with all away games.

How long does it take?

Using 60-minute volleyball slots, 120 games need about 120 hours on one court, 60 hours on two, or 30 hours on four. A weekly league playing one round per week runs 15 weeks. Pro's scheduler turns those numbers into actual dates, start times and courts, honouring rest gaps and games-per-day limits.

Volleyball rules that affect the schedule

League volleyball is best-of-3 or best-of-5 sets to 25 (15 in the deciding set). Matches cannot end in a tie, and many leagues also track set ratio.

Tie-breakers: Match wins, then set ratio (sets won ÷ sets lost), then point ratio, then head-to-head.

Organizer tip: With multiple courts in one gym, stagger start times by 15 minutes so warm-ups do not collide.
