How a 16-team chess round robin works

Every team plays each of the other 15 teams once, which is 120 games in total. With an even number of teams every team plays in every round, so the whole schedule fits in 15 rounds with no byes. A double round robin (home and away) doubles that to 240 games over 30 rounds.

Round 1 pairings

The generator uses the circle method, which guarantees each pair meets exactly once. For 16 teams seeded 1–16, round 1 is: 1 v 16, 15 v 2, 3 v 14, 13 v 4, 5 v 12, 11 v 6, 7 v 10, 9 v 8. Home and away alternate so no team is stuck with all away games.

How long does it take?

Using 60-minute chess slots, 120 games need about 120 hours on one board, 60 hours on two, or 30 hours on four. A weekly league playing one round per week runs 15 weeks. Pro's scheduler turns those numbers into actual dates, start times and boards, honouring rest gaps and games-per-day limits.

Chess rules that affect the schedule

Club round robins use 1 point for a win and ½ for a draw. Colors (white/black) alternate — the home/away column in the schedule can be read as white/black.

Tie-breakers: Sonneborn-Berger, then direct encounter, then number of wins.

Organizer tip: Read "home" as white. The generator balances home games so colors are as even as possible.
